Key Impact Skills TrainingSM

Key Impact SkillsSM are those foundational skills that can lead to impactful outcomes, both individual and organizational. These Key Impact SkillsSM include five key areas.

How We Do It

Mindfulness-Based Risk Reduction®

Mindfulness-Based Risk Reduction® combines well-tested program evaluation theories and methods with the neuroscience research and evidence-based practices of mindfulness to design and implement effective interventions that promote and strengthen a culture of safety, health, and well-being.

We methodically explore, experiment, and embed disciplined values and competencies.

Program Evaluation

Program evaluation methods and standards are formally embedded into all that we do to ensure high quality intervention designs, and that the products and tools we create get used by intended users with potentially broad scale impacts.

We use The Program Evaluation Standards published by the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (2011, Sage) as guiding principles when working with clients, including the five key evaluation standards: utility, feasibility, propriety, accuracy, and accountability.

We also follow the guidelines and methods established by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration’s Manual for Research, Development, & Technology Program and Project Evaluations, and its accompanying Evaluation Implementation Plan.

Mindfulness Task AnalysisSM

Mindfulness task analysis (MTA)SM is a nuanced modification to traditional cognitive task analysis (CTA) methodology to better understand how on-the-job activities can train the mind to improve resilience, cognitive performance, judgment, and safety critical decision-making.

MTASM is a methodology to capture and measure the organization’s emotional culture and its collective wisdom for contextualizing and customizing the design of system-wide interventions and practices to improve safety, health, and well-being in the workplace.

Key Impact SkillsSM

Non-technical skills, often referred to as “soft skills” or “people skills”, are some of the most critical skills an organization can cultivate. Key Impact SkillsSM are those foundational non-technical skills that can lead to impactful outcomes, both individual and organizational.

These Key Impact SkillsSM include five key areas:

1) Self-Awareness
2) Relationship Building
3) Team Building
4) Systems Thinking
5) Societal Relations

Mindfulness-Based Risk Reduction®

Our MBRR® process is an overarching evaluative framework that integrates mindful organizing, mindfulness-based training, and mindful practices into existing organization structures and systems, such as safety management systems (SMS), to reduce the risks associated with the frequency and severity of harm, including both physical and emotional harm.

MBRR® combines well-tested program evaluation theories and methods with the neuroscience research and evidence-based practices of mindfulness to design and implement effective interventions that promote and strengthen a culture of safety, health, and well-being.

Program Evaluation

Our program evaluations follow the guidelines and methods as established in the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration’s Manual for Research, Development, & Technology Program and Project Evaluations, and Evaluation Implementation Plan

We also use the The Program Evaluation Standards published by the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (2011, Sage), as guiding principles when conducting evaluations, including the five key standards:

Utility

Feasibility

Propriety

Accuracy

Accountability

Mindfulness Task AnalysisSM

Our Mindfulness Task AnalysisSM (MTASM) tool is a nuanced modification to traditional cognitive task analysis (CTA) methods. This tool integrates principles of mindfulness with the systematic analysis of cognitive processes, allowing for a deeper understanding of how individuals engage with tasks and their internal states during task performance.

By capturing not only actions and decisions but also thoughts, emotions, and attentional focus of individuals, this approach provides a holistic view of task execution. To enhance naturalistic decision making and improve organizational effectiveness, the MTA tool uncovers subtle cognitive and affective factors that:

Influence Performance in Complex Organizational Contexts

Identify Areas for Improvement

Target System Interventions

This tool is invaluable for designing customized interventions that promote well-being, resilience, and optimal performance by addressing the underlying cognitive and emotional processes of decision making, ultimately leading to more adaptive and sustainable organizational outcomes.

Key Impact Skills TrainingSM

Key Impact SkillsSM are non-technical foundational skills, such as social and emotional intelligence, stress reduction, listening and communicating with empathy, trust building, and conflict resolution that are essential for building individual resilience and impactful people skills.

Our Approach

Expanding Self Awareness

At the heart of organizational effectiveness are individual self-awareness and self-management. Through introspective exploration and interactive exercises, we help individuals understand their strengths, weaknesses, values, and triggers. This increased self-awareness enables better emotion regulation, resilience, and adaptability. Mastering self-management techniques forms the foundation for effective leadership, teamwork, and decision-making within the organization.

Prioritizing Relationship Building

Expanding from self-awareness, we prioritize relationship building to enhance understanding of interpersonal dynamics and communication styles. Through experiential learning and role-playing, participants develop skills for fostering collaborative relationships. By linking self-awareness and relationship building, individuals gain tools for cultivating meaningful connections and driving impactful outcomes. We refine active listening, conflict management, and empathy skills to foster authentic communication and a culture of trust and cooperation.

Harnessing the Collective Potential of Teams

Expanding from self-awareness and relationships, team building focuses on harnessing the collective potential of teams to hone organizational impact skills through collaborative activities and discussions, fostering bonds and enhancing communication. From trust and accountability to leveraging diverse perspectives and strengths, this impact skill equips individuals with the essential tools for effective teamwork and collaboration driving performance and achieving success through innovation.

Enhancing Systems Awareness

Our fourth impact skill focuses on systems awareness, viewing the workplace as interconnected systems rather than isolated parts. We explore using one’s intuition to elevate situational awareness and understand system complexities. Individuals learn how to tap into their felt sense to uncover hidden patterns, feedback loops, and emergent behaviors, enhancing their ability to navigate complexity with clarity and agility. Integrating intuition into systems thinking helps individuals improve situational awareness, detect weak signals of potential failure and trust intuitive decision-making.

Strengthening Societal Relations

Our final impact skill focuses on societal relations, empowering organizations to thrive within their broader ecosystem. We explore best practices for promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I), cultivating mutually beneficial relationships, strong community and industry ties, and a more resilient workforce.

Through interactive sessions, case studies, and collaborative exercises, individuals learn to leverage their organization’s strengths for positive community impact and industry partnerships. This training equips organizations to be influential contributors and individuals with tools for ethical and transparent external relations, emphasizing B Corp standards in corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices.

Cultivating these foundational skills and the accompanying behavioral competencies is important for senior leaders; and equally, if not more importantly, for front-line employees because that is where the impacts occur:

Mindfulness-Based Risk Reduction®

Our Mindfulness-Based Risk Reduction® (MBRR®) approach embeds mindful organizing, Key Impact SkillsSM training, and mindful practices into the structure of organizational systems.

Individuals and teams develop the ability to recognize and respond skillfully to potential risks, cultivating a transformative culture designed to:

Enhance Collective Mindfulness

Build Leadership Awareness

Promote Agile & Adaptive Decision-Making

Organizations can harness the power of collective awareness, implement strategic change, and measure its success to promote ethical decision-making. We can help your organization cultivate a culture of learning and innovation based on a foundation of trust and understanding. This holistic approach can not only mitigate risk but also foster organizational resilience, wisdom, and long-term success in dynamic and uncertain environments.
